Don Corbiell

Don is a member of the Professional Skater's Association (PSA) and has recently completed his Master Ratings.  He is now a Master rated coach in both Freestyle and Moves in the Field.  He is also a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance.  Click here for Don's coaching philosophy.

Don is originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  He started playing hockey at the age of 4, as is often the case in Canada!  He started figure skating to improve his hockey skillsDhdsht.jpg (8987 bytes) and quickly excelled at it.  Figure skating became his passion and hockey was soon left behind.

Don was trained in figures, ice dancing and freestyle.  After training and competing in Canada from 1975 – 1983 Don turned professional and began to teach.  He taught for 3 years while he attended the University of Calgary. He then decided to join the Ice Capades and toured nationally and internationally with that show for 7 years.  While in Ice Capades, Don took part in the John Curry Edge Class. After that, he performed as a freelance skater for 2 more years and then decided to settle down in San Francisco.

For a while Don called Colorado Springs home.  This gave him a chance to skate at the world-renowned Broadmoor training center.  To study jump technique, Don has taken jump lessons with Kathy Casey at the Broadmoor and has worked with Russian pair coach, Tamara Moskvina, on areas such as stroking technique and power.  He also worked with Janet Champion on spin technique.   Don then studied the Gus Lussi spin technique that he teaches today.

When the “Moves In The Field” were introduced to replace the school figures in ice-skating, Don traveled back to Colorado Springs to learn and study this discipline with Christi Krall who was one of the key people involved with their incorporation into the USFSA test structure.  He came back to San Francisco and took all the new tests right through the Gold level.  He was one of the first three people known in the country to take all of the test levels.

While Don is well trained in all areas of skating, he focuses his teaching on the technical aspects of skating especially jump technique, spin technique and moves in the field.  He has coached students through their gold level in freestyle and moves in the field and has also coached competitive skaters right up to the senior level.  He also teaches ice dance to those who wish to take their tests.  Don has been coaching in the Bay Area for over 18 years now.

Don has a great connection with children and works equally as well with adults.  He is able to adjust his teaching style to switch from children to adults with no trouble.  Don says he is willing to teach anyone, whatever age or whatever level, as long as they want to learn.
